Guys and Gals,
18 hours ago I was sitting on the edge of an emergency room table. You know the ones that could be comfortable, but they decide to cover it with that stupid sheet of white paper. Sorry, had to get that off my chest. Anyways, I was awaiting a potential mono diagnosis. Thankfully for my sanity, the result was negative. As I was sitting on that paper covered table, my flight to Paris was growing ever closer. Seriously, if that test took 10 minutes longer I may be staring at my bedroom ceiling instead of the sprawling French countryside.
Now here I am, staring out the window of a very posh train, savoring what are sure to be my last moments of solace and isolation for the next couple months.
I’m en route to Bordeaux to meet up with the band of hooligans I call my best friends. Seriously, they are ridiculous. When I texted them to let them know I may have mono and might have to postpone my arrival they responded with, “ya u should take a lot of drugs so ur good cuz we going out Friday Saturday Sunday”. Thanks for your sympathy (and awesome grammatical abilities), guys! Now can you understand why I am squeezing this train ride for every ounce of tranquility it possesses?
Whether my immune system likes it or not, shit is about to hit the fan in a couple hours when they pick me up at the train station. From that point on, all bets are off. A group of recent college grads armed with Eurail passes, backpacks, slightly inflated bank accounts (thanks to the grad money yeeee) and a collective drive to find fun in any situation—this is what Airplane Mode is all about.
I may not be able to tell you with any sense of certainty where I will be or what I will be doing in one week’s time, but I can promise you it’s gonna be dope and I can promise you I will be further embellishing it with some completely unnecessary adjectives.
Welcome to Airplane Mode.
Jake, The Intern
