Meet the Mandate Press

One of the things we love about our work is being able to do business with other like minded rad people. We have been working with the Mandate Press now for a couple years for letter pressed works and they represent the ethos of the Honest Hustle spirit. We recently did a limited run of custom Honest Hustle posters and are excited to introduce you to Ben and The Mandate Press.

“I started Mandate back in 2004. At the time I was working full time as an in-house graphic designer and maintaining my letterpress print shop on the side as a hobby/side gig.

Well, the side gig had grown enough that it was starting to encroach on the 9-5 so it was time to decide which one I was going to give my 100% and the choice was easy. The Mandate Press was officially born. The name was inspired by the phrase “by mandate of the people”, which just kept coming to mind. I really see printing as technology that changed history and gave a voice to people that they didn’t have before.

It all started in a garage with just two hand-fed presses, a 10×15 C&P and a Vandercook #4 proof press, and a hand operated guillotine paper cutter. Today we’re in an 8000 sq. ft. building and have a stable of 10 presses with automatic Heidelberg windmills and cylinder presses as our main workhorses. We’re a “modern letterpress” shop (vs. a purist or historic focus) in that we don’t use any of the old lead type anymore but rather print from raised polymer plates. We’re completely self contained, and use digital design files to make film negatives which we in turn use to expose and process our own plates in-house. Once in the press, these plates are inked and pressed against the paper leaving that nice tactile impression in the sheet that we all love.”
